The European Academy for Freedom of Information and Data Protection (EAID) was founded in 2003 on the initiative of the then Berlin Data Protection Supervisor Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Garstka. Since September 2013 he has been the honorary chairman of the academy. The current chairman of the EAID is Peter Schaar, who served as German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information until 17 December 2013.
Freedom of Information and Privacy are two sides of the same coin. For more than ten years, the EAID advocates the strengthening of transparency and protection of privacy. Thus, the academy initiated the establishment of the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) ten years ago.
The EAID pays special attention to creating an exclusive platform for strategic discussions between science, politics and society on the future of Freedom of Information and Data Protection in Germany and Europe.
The EAID is closely co-operating with the European Academy Berlin (EAB) in Berlin Grunewald.
