15 July 2024: Ulrich Kelber becomes new EAID-member
Press Release
Prof Ulrich Kelber, Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) until the beginning of July, has joined the European Academy for Freedom of Information and Data Protection (EAID). Its Chairman Peter Schaar, who was also BfDI from 2003 to 2013, is delighted with the new addition. “With Ulrich Kelber, we are gaining a committed and competent new colleague. In his years as BfDI, but also before that as a member of the Bundestag and as State Secretary, he has campaigned for freedom of information and data protection. The EAID Executive Board warmly welcomes the new member and looks forward to working with him.”
The European Academy for Freedom of Information and Data Protection (EAID) was founded in 2003 on the initiative of the then Berlin Data Protection Commissioner Prof Dr Dr Hansjürgen Garstka, who has been its Honorary Chairman since 2013. Freedom of information and data protection are two sides of the same coin. For more than 20 years, the EAID has been campaigning for greater transparency and improved protection of privacy. The founding of the International Conference of Freedom of Information Commissioners (ICIC), for example, can be traced back to an EAID initiative. The EAID sees itself as an exclusive platform for strategic discussions between science, politics and society on the future of freedom of information and data protection in Germany and Europe.
